Michelle Marie Sawtell is a powerhouse, Boston-based Visionary Artist and Creative Alchemist. As a true conscious polymath, her practice seamlessly integrates her work across the intersections of music, visual art, style curation and holistic wellness. Her work is grounded in the belief that art is not confined to a single medium, but is an integrated expression of identity, emotion, and lived experience.
Her visual journey is rooted in a lifelong connection to the lens, a foundation sparked in early childhood by access to prototype cameras at Polaroid, expanded through hands on experience working at a local camera shop, and studying black and white film photography during her high school years at Cambridge Rindge and Latin under the guidance of Jon Baring Gould. As a multi hyphenate visual educator who also taught ceramics, he inspired her to treat the camera not just as a tool, but as a fearless medium for capturing raw truth. With over thirty years of experience capturing raw emotion, including more than a decade documenting the Boston and New England live music scene, Michelle is also widely known for her evocative nature and wildlife photography. Over the years, her work has been showcased in numerous galleries and private exhibitions. Today, her photography exists purely as a visual portfolio of her eye, as she does not shoot for hire. Instead, that deep technical mastery of imagery is channeled entirely into high level Creative Direction, shaping the aesthetic curation, conscious luxury, and visual language for her own artistic expression and collaboration with artists, brands, and visionary projects.
Through style curation, her approach to fashion exists entirely outside the cycle of temporary trends. Guided by a commitment to sustainability and ethical practices, her fashion expertise infuses conscious elegance into high-level creative direction. Bending gender lines since childhood, she effortlessly transitions between feminine classics and structured menswear, with denim remaining her lifelong signature style. Since 2018, she has leveraged deep industry knowledge gained through working as a personal stylist for major brands including Athleta, Loft, Marine Layer, and in her current role with Faherty Brand. While she no longer offers private or independent styling sessions, that comprehensive background spanning work with personal clients, musicians for live shows, and photo shoots is now channeled entirely into her creative direction. Today, her fashion portfolio represents an ongoing exploration of style engineered purely as an empowering, sustainable art form. Deeply rooted in conscious, timeless classic luxury aesthetics, deliberate structure, and authentic self-expression, she curates intentional wardrobe narratives. As a Recording and Performance Artist, Michelle Marie Sawtell creates immersive sonic landscapes that invite introspection and connection, steering projects strictly by intuition, ear, and vision. For Michelle, music has always been a first language. Her lifetime on the stage began in 1985 at just two and a half years old, when she won the Talent America regional preliminary in Boston. She went on to represent Massachusetts at the 1986 national finals in New York City, taking home 2nd place overall and the prestigious "Tina Turner Award" a special performance honor recognizing her show stopping toddler rendition of the chart topping hit, "What’s Love Got to Do with It." Possessing this innate, natural ear for music from the very start, she went on to refine her gifts through years of daily school music classes and vocal ensembles in the Cambridge Public Schools. Her early vocal foundations were shaped by celebrated gospel director Donnell Patterson, studying under him from kindergarten through 3rd grade. From 4th through 8th grade, she closely continued her musical training under the dedicated instruction of Thomas E. Jenei at the Robert F. Kennedy School, who formally recognized her exceptional talent in 1994 by presenting her with the award for Outstanding Achievement in Singing. She later studied and performed under Patterson again in high school. This rich, structured foundation shaped her into the vocalist that she is today, who connects deeply to the raw feeling of a song. Her professional music journey began in 2015 and includes her rock project, Michelle Marie Sawtell, and Sound Goddess Healing, an electronic experimental pop project channeling high vibrational expressions of empowerment. Grounded in lyricism and deep collaborative presence, she brings her songwriting and sonic vision into alignment alongside renowned industry artists.
Her early career was well established in holistic wellness and the healing arts, serving as a visionary energy and sound practitioner and cultural community leader at yoga studios, meditation centers, wellness clinics, and art galleries. Holding multiple certifications across these modalities, she emerged in 2014 as an early pioneer in multidimensional energy and sound healing. In this role, she extended her care to individuals navigating autoimmune conditions, chronic pain, cancer and intensive medical treatments like chemotherapy. Supporting clients both through specialized community events and intimate, in-home private sessions, she established a sanctuary of healing to help them regulate their nervous systems, ease severe side effects, and find profound emotional comfort. She also served as a meditation guide and ascension coach, leading both adults and children through profound personal and spiritual evolution. As a featured guest and facilitator at numerous wellness expos and high-end retreats, she focused on collective transformation and intentional living. Alongside this, she worked extensively with rescued animals in sanctuary settings, offering compassionate care, energy, and sound healing during periods of transition and recovery. Her insights into holistic animal care were later featured in Animal Wellness Magazine.
During this time, she launched a former soul-centered jewelry line, handcrafting one-of-a-kind pieces from crystals and upcycled vintage materials. While the line is no longer in production, each piece was originally infused with intention, energy, and sound vibrations to support personal growth, inner harmony, and alignment of mind, body, and spirit.
All of these experiences continue to shape her work today, grounding her creative practice in refined awareness, deep intuition, and an enduring respect for the interconnectedness of all beings. As the founder of Sovereign Artist LLC, she weaves craftsmanship, sustainability, and self governance into a unified creative ethos.
