We still have about 15 days until spring officially arrives, but this is when layering starts to get interesting.

Instead of bulky winter pieces, mixing colors, patterns, and textures creates a lighter, more intentional look while still working for unpredictable weather.

Today’s look starts with an organic cotton rugby top with a cream collar and brown and light blue stripes. The structured collar gives it a slightly polished feel while still being as comfortable as a sweatshirt. I layered a cream quilted overshirt on top, adding texture and dimension without introducing another pattern.

I paired it with mid-wash straight leg denim, my signature silhouette, and a brown braided leather belt that ties into the warmer tones in the rugby stripes. The classic shape of the jeans keeps the look grounded and balanced.

Late winter style is really about balance. Keeping enough warmth for the cold days while slowly introducing lighter textures and colors that hint at the season ahead. Go ahead, express yourself. ✨

A close-up high-angle self-portrait shot of Michelle Marie Sawtell showing a layered winter-to-spring transitional look. She wears a cream-colored diamond-quilted button-up overshirt with large brown tortoiseshell-style buttons open over an organic cotton rugby shirt. The rugby top features light blue and brown horizontal stripes and a cream polo collar with smaller tan buttons. Blue denim jeans are visible at the bottom.

A top-down view looking down at a styled casual outfit. The look consists of light-to-mid wash straight-leg blue denim jeans paired with a brown and light blue horizontally striped rugby shirt tucked in. The rugby top features a cream placket with tan buttons left unbuttoned at the neckline. An open cream-colored diamond-quilted overshirt with prominent faux-tortoiseshell buttons layers over the top, framing the outfit.
